This is my place in time.
I’m actually a little too young (it feels good to be able to say that!) to remember when Laurie Potter’s health club was actually open. The name still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth and minds of thousands of Australians who purchased lifetime memberships back in the 1980s, only for the business to go belly up in 1987.
Growing up in Midland, I spent a lifetime walking into town and passing this old mural which is located on a wall at the rear of Renaissance gym (or is it Renouf? I can never remember) on the Great Eastern Hwy. I have no idea why, or how it has remained largely untouched when so many other things in Midland have changed. I suspect it’s a case of ‘never forget’.
The mural is probably at least 30 years old now, so I’m not sure how much longer it will remain there for. Despite there being many, many old murals in Perth that are far more interesting, this seemed a perfect illustration for the prompt because it’s from my own home suburb.
